Hundreds of participants will flock to the CBD this Saturday for Darwin’s 10th annual International Women’s Day Walk and Celebration event.
City of Darwin, along with United Nations Association of Australia NT, NT Government Office of Gender Equity and Diversity, and City of Palmerston will host the event, kicking off at 8.30am in Civic Park.
Alderman Robin Knox reflected on the growing popularity of the event, which is now in its 10th successive year.
“The Darwin community embraces International Women’s Day, and the event’s ongoing success is a fitting tribute to Alderman Robin Lesley, who brought the first International Women’s Day Walk to Darwin in 2009.”
“We see whole families walking to support the women in our community who inspire, achieve, and make us proud. The atmosphere is always fantastic” said Knox.
United Nations Association of Australia NT President, Katrina Fong Lim believes this year’s theme of “More Powerful Together” resonates well within the Darwin community.
“As an official UN day, International Women’s Day is a time to press for gender equity and reflect on the need to continue to work towards achieving it.”
“As a community working together, Darwin will be more powerful, more connected, and more focused on realising our goal” said Fong Lim.
The NT Government Office of Gender Equity and Diversity is encouraging the community to check out the 2019 International Women’s Day program.
“International Women’s Day is a wonderful opportunity for the community to gather and celebrate the achievements and contributions of Territory women.”
There is a range of events happening locally, and we would love to see everyone getting involved” said an NT Government spokesperson.
Participants in the International Women’s Day Walk and Celebration will gather in the Civic Centre court yard at 8.30am, with the walk getting underway at 9.00am.
Post walk celebrations in Civic Park include an address by keynote speaker Her Honour the Honourable Vicki O’Halloran AM, Administrator of the Northern Territory, live music by NT artist Phoebe Wear, information stands, and a variety of tasty food and beverage stall options from the Malak Marketplace Organic Farmers Market.
Free bus travel to and from the event is available to participants who have downloaded the International Women’s Day flyer from the City of Darwin website: darwin.nt.gov.au.
The International Women’s Day Walk and Celebration is a free community event.
Participants are encouraged to wear purple, BYO water bottle, and invite friends and family as we are #MorePowerfulTogether
